According to BC Labor market the demand for truck drivers will grow up to 2.8% per year in comparison with other occupations. The reason for that is transportation industry growth. Nevertheless, truck driving is the occupation that records a turnover rate as high as 50%, according to various resources.

Truck Drivers wanted in New Brunswick, Canada!

What are the reasons for high turnover?

  • Many people are unprepared for the realities of the occupation: long-hours, heavy lifting, stressful driving circumstances, endless roads and day-to-day realities of the work.
  • While some companies in BC maintain excellent vehicles and standards, there are hundreds of independent operators which work as hard as they can to lower their costs and out-bid their competitors. This leads to major cuts to the safety maintenance of vehicles and to the poor treatment of drivers.

The growth will be less in the Fraser Valley, on Central and Northern Vancouver Island, Kamloops and the Thompson Region, Prince George and the Cariboo Region. Lower Mainland and greater Victoria, Okanagan will face the highest growth of the transportation industry.

The key factor for anyone considering this profession should be to question why there is so much turnover in the industry.
